Our crimson hearts hurt with the pains of yesterday
Unsure how to grieve from endless heartache
Seeking peace before the world is awake.
I breathe in deeply as I step out into the dawn
Outside, the spring air kisses my skin
As squirrels scamper across the street
From grass to cement, broken pavement to sand
The ground remains steady beneath my feet.
Cottontails bound for safety under a bush
The colors of daffodils and hyacinth are ever so bright
The bruised blue sky softens now
Clouds pass by, giving way to light.
I walk beside the flowering red oak and admire her hue
Before the tiny ripples of the pond greet me at my feet
I watch a bird swoop down to grab a fish
As I walk onto the dock to take my seat.
Here, nature plays her soft, sweet lullaby
I soak in the stillness, a tear fills my eye
I notice my breath, my heartbeat and smile
As I lay back and stare knowingly at the sky
The sun shines a golden spotlight on the treetops
The morning light bouncing off soaring wings
The birds sing proudly on budding branches
Curiously chattering about what the day might bring
In unison, the birds sing their morning melody
The woodpecker tapping starts the metronome
The sunlight radiates as the orchestra plays
Baby birds begin calling their moms back home
The sun warms my face as I make my way back
Each step syncs to the sounds of the day
Branches dance softly from growing trees
The green newness of spring painting the way
Before the obligations of life call me back
I pause and savor the flutter of freedom above
The birds sing of hope, of wonder, of miracles
And so, I too, will sing of love.
